Goodbye

This town’s been around
Standing for years
And it’s a good town with a downtown
And a fancy veneer
With sidewalks and classic shops
All sheltered from the rain and full of
Law abiding citizens

I have been around
Lived here for years
And I’ve bought daily bread, and medicine
And soap to wash my sins
From the vendors, the sellers
The moms and pops and dwellers
That all make up this upstanding town

Let’s stamp our books and music
With a name
So everyone who hears it
Knows it’s safe

Goodbye, I’m leaving today
I’m tired of living this way
I can’t find your face in this crowd
So I’m leaving their law for your love

They say, you oughta stay
You’ll have a fine career
And the only way, art will pay
Is when it’s easier to hear
Lose the questions, the mention
Of anything dissentious and just
Sing even if it’s a lie

We’re making lots of money
Off your name
But it’s okay as long as
As long as someone’s saved
